Sri Lanka revolutionized one-day batting with openers Sanath Jayasuriya and Romesh Kaluwitharana aggressively exploiting fielding restrictions, setting a then-record team score of 398/5 against Kenya, while Gary Kirsten's unbeaten 188 set an individual record that stood until 2015. The first semi-final at Eden Gardens saw India collapse after Sachin Tendulkar's dismissal, sparking crowd violence and the first-ever default in a Test or ODI, which was awarded to Sri Lanka by referee Clive Lloyd. In the final, Sri Lanka became the first host nation to win the title, with Aravinda de Silva taking 3/42 and scoring an unbeaten 107 to claim Player of the Match, successfully chasing Australia's 241/7.
