Benjamin Crump, born October 10, 1969, is a prominent American civil rights attorney often called "Black America's attorney general" for his work representing families in high-profile wrongful death and police brutality cases. A graduate of Florida State University (BA 1992, JD 1995), Crump founded the Ben Crump Law firm in Tallahassee, Florida, and gained national prominence starting in 2012 by representing the family of Trayvon Martin. He has since represented the families of Michael Brown (2014), Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and Tyre Nichols, among many others, with his cases frequently fueling nationwide and international protests against police brutality. Beyond police killings, his firm has taken on diverse clients, including victims of the Flint water crisis, the estates of Henrietta Lacks and Malcolm X, and nearly 200 attendees of the 2021 Astroworld Festival tragedy. While celebrated for his advocacy, he has faced some criticism, notably from Tamir Rice's mother, who fired him over concerns about his familiarity with Ohio law.
