Ms. magazine, co-founded by journalist and activist Gloria Steinem in 1971, became the first national American feminist magazine, aiming to give women a voice in mainstream media. It debuted as a one-off insert in New York magazine in December 1971, and its first standalone issue appeared in January 1972, featuring a now-iconic cover of a pregnant Hindu goddess Kali with eight arms holding a clock, skillet, and typewriter—which sold out 300,000 copies in just three days. The magazine was created by a team of editors including Letty Cottin Pogrebin and Patricia Carbine, and it tackled issues like abortion, sexist language, and women's empowerment, moving beyond traditional domestic topics. It was influenced by the women in print movement and even included a coupon for readers to sign a list of famous women who had had abortions. After publishing monthly from 1972 to 1987, Ms. is now a quarterly publication run by the Feminist Majority Foundation (since 2001), based in Los Angeles and Arlington, Virginia.
