Speed tape is an aluminium pressure-sensitive tape used for temporary repairs on aircraft and racing cars, often mistaken for duct tape but designed to adhere firmly at high speeds. Its history dates back to 1959 for splicing wires and 1960 for soundproofing the Convair 880, and it is resistant to water, solvents, and brief flames while reflecting heat and UV light. It is commonly used to patch non-critical components, protect curing sealant, and even cover bullet damage on combat aircraft. A notable recent application occurred in 2022 when Boeing recommended applying speed tape to certain Boeing 787 Dreamliner wings to temporarily prevent paint peeling caused by UV damage. Airlines typically avoid using it on passenger-visible parts to prevent concern, but its use is strictly regulated—it must be authorized by engineering teams, and improper repairs can result in fines.
