The January 6th Committee was a U.S. House select committee established on July 1, 2021, to investigate the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Its investigation concluded that former President Donald Trump knew he had lost the 2020 election but spearheaded an unprecedented effort to overturn it, leading the committee to subpoena him—though he refused to testify and sued instead. On December 19, 2022, the committee unanimously voted to refer Trump and lawyer John Eastman to the Department of Justice, recommending charges including obstruction of an official proceeding, conspiracy to defraud the U.S., and incitement of insurrection. The committee's massive scope involved interviewing over 1,000 witnesses and reviewing over a million documents, culminating in an 845-page final report. Politically contentious, the committee included only two Republicans—Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger—who were censured by the RNC for their participation. For defying subpoenas, Trump aides Peter Navarro and Steve Bannon were convicted of contempt of Congress and served four-month prison sentences in 2024.
