CBS Sports has a long and storied history with college football, beginning its national broadcasts in 1950 and featuring early traditions like the Orange Bowl (1953) and Cotton Bowl (1958). After losing regular-season rights to ABC's exclusive NCAA contract in 1966, CBS returned to weekly games in 1982 and later secured a landmark deal with the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in 1996, also becoming the permanent home of the Army–Navy Game. In a major shift, CBS declined to renew its SEC package in 2019 (which moved to ABC in 2024) and instead signed a new contract with the Big Ten Conference starting in 2023, now occupying its traditional 3:30 p.m. ET timeslot. These main-network broadcasts are currently branded as "The Home Depot Big Ten on CBS" (or "The Home Depot College Football on CBS" for non-Big Ten games) due to a title sponsorship. Beyond the main network, CBS owns CBS Sports Network (acquired in 2006), which airs games from conferences like the MAC, Conference USA, and Mountain West, as well as service academy teams. Notably, the Sun Bowl has aired on CBS continuously since 1968, making it the longest-running network-bowl partnership in college football history.
