The Hyatt Grand Central New York, located at 109 East 42nd Street adjoining Grand Central Terminal, originally opened as the 2,000-room Commodore Hotel on January 28, 1919, designed by Warren & Wetmore. After closing in 1976, Donald Trump and Hyatt partnered to spend $100 million renovating the historic structure into the Grand Hyatt New York (1978–1980), stripping away its ornate interiors in favor of a striking glass facade and three-story atrium. The Pritzker family acquired Trump's stake in 1996, and following a temporary closure in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the hotel reopened in 2021 under its current name. Despite its storied past, the building is slated for demolition to make way for the 175 Park Avenue skyscraper, announced in 2019, with construction permits applied for in 2026. Notably, the site includes a subway entrance directly underneath and originally featured an Italian courtyard-style lobby, though the Commodore's grand ballroom was preserved during the 1980 renovation.
