Business networking

Business networking is the practice of building professional relationships through the strategic exchange of information and resources, often via in-person events like conferences or online platforms such as LinkedIn. Its primary goals include career advancement, uncovering unadvertised job openings, gaining industry knowledge, and generating referrals, with estimates suggesting that around half of all jobs in the USA are found through these connections. For companies, networking is a key marketing tool that builds trust and raises brand awareness, contrasting with traditional hierarchical management by being more open and supportive. Historically, business networks evolved from medieval guilds and chambers of commerce (founded in the 1700s) to early 20th-century service clubs like the Rotary, Lions, and Kiwanis. In the latter half of the 20th century, networking was actively promoted to build "social capital," particularly helping members of marginalized groups—such as women and African Americans—gain professional footholds. Ultimately, successful networking relies on preparation and continued engagement to deepen relational ties and foster mutual adaptation.
