PADRES (Priests Associated for Religious, Education, and Social Rights) was a Chicano Catholic priests' organization founded in October 1969 in San Antonio, Texas, by figures like Fr. Ralph Ruiz and Fr. Henry Casso to combat discrimination against Mexican Americans within the Church and society. At their first national congress in February 1970 in Tucson, they formally demanded the appointment of Mexican-American bishops, Spanish-speaking pastors, and support for the grape boycott, while also pushing for a liaison with the National Council of Catholic Bishops. Despite initial resistance, the bishops eventually established an informal liaison committee to address their concerns. The organization successfully advocated for greater cultural inclusion and social justice within the Church, effectively ceasing operations in 1989 after achieving its primary objectives.
