David Muir is a prominent American journalist who has anchored ABC World News Tonight since September 1, 2014, when he succeeded Diane Sawyer, and he also co-anchors the newsmagazine 20/20. Since joining ABC News in 2003, he has reported from major global hotspots—including Afghanistan, Iraq, Ukraine, and Gaza—earning multiple Emmy and Edward R. Murrow awards, as well as the 2024 Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism. His flagship newscast has been the most-watched in the United States since 2015, making him one of the most visible journalists in America. Born in Syracuse, New York, in 1973, Muir was inspired by legendary anchor Peter Jennings and graduated from Ithaca College in 1995 after working at local stations WTVH and WCVB. His early career included notable coverage of Hurricane Katrina and tracing the 9/11 hijackers, while his climate reporting has also been recognized with the George Polk and Alfred I. duPont-Columbia awards.
