WPXI (channel 11) is an NBC-affiliated television station in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, owned by Cox Media Group, with studios in the Summer Hill neighborhood and a transmitter on Television Hill. It first signed on as WIIC on September 1, 1957, after a two-year delay caused by a license challenge, and originally planned to be a CBS affiliate before NBC stepped in when KDKA-TV took the CBS affiliation. The station was sold to Cox Enterprises in 1964 and has since become the longest-running NBC affiliate under Cox's ownership. In 1970, it made local broadcasting history when Eleanor Schano became the first woman to anchor a newscast solo in Pittsburgh. The station adopted its current call sign, WPXI (meaning "Pittsburgh 11," with "XI" as the Roman numeral for 11), on April 20, 1981. Early iconic programming included Studio Wrestling and Chiller Theatre, both hosted by Bill Cardille, who signed the station on the air.
