The Northwoods League is a collegiate summer wooden-bat baseball and fastpitch softball organization spanning the Upper Midwestern United States and Northwestern Ontario, Canada. Founded in 1994 with just five charter teams, it has since expanded to over a dozen franchises, reaching Michigan in 2007 and going international with the Thunder Bay Border Cats in 2003. The league is a proven pipeline to the pros, with over 400 alumni reaching Major League Baseball, including stars like Max Scherzer, Chris Sale, Pete Alonso, and Curtis Granderson. Its history is marked by significant firsts: Jeff Weaver debuted in MLB in 1999, Juan Pierre won the first World Series in 2003, and George Sherrill became the first All-Star in 2008. The league has also had its share of pop-culture moments, such as actor Tyler Hoechlin playing for the Battle Creek Bombers in 2007, even missing a meeting with Francis Ford Coppola for a game. Today, the league continues to thrive, adding teams like the Willmar Stingers and Wisconsin Rapids Rafters, solidifying its reputation as a top summer destination for college athletes.
