JD Vance, the 50th Vice President of the United States, is a national conservative and right-wing populist who identifies with the postliberal right and draws heavily on Catholic social teaching. On social issues, he is staunchly conservative, opposing abortion (even in cases of rape and incest, famously saying "two wrongs don't make a right"), same-sex marriage, and gun control, while also proposing federal bans on gender-affirming care for minors and suggesting that parents should have more voting power than non-parents (a stance he later backtracked on). He has repeatedly linked childlessness to sociopathy and has endorsed books by Heritage Foundation president Kevin Roberts and far-right conspiracy theorist Jack Posobiec. In foreign policy, he supports Israel in the Gaza war but opposes continued U.S. military aid to Ukraine, favoring a negotiated peace, and he is highly critical of universities, the DOJ, and the FBI, calling for a "de-woke-ification program." Politically, Vance was a vocal "never Trump" critic in 2016, calling Trump "reprehensible," but he reversed course in 2021 when running for Senate, apologizing and even advising Trump to fire all civil servants. He has also stated that as Vice President he would not have certified the 2020 election results, instead insisting that states Trump lost should have sent pro-Trump electors to Congress.
