The Mars bar, a chocolate bar made of caramel and nougat coated in milk chocolate, was first manufactured in 1932 in Slough, England, by Forrest Mars Sr., who adapted his father's American Milky Way recipe for European tastes. While this global version is sold in a black wrapper, the United States had a distinct version with toasted almonds, which was discontinued in 2002 and later revived as "Snickers Almond". The bar has a notable history, including three million bars being sent with the British task force to the Falklands in 1982, and its logo has evolved from a tilted black font to the sleek cursive design used today. Over the years, the bar's size has been repeatedly reduced—such as in the UK (from 62.5g to 58g in 2008, and down to 51g by 2013) and in Australia (from 60g to 53g in 2009)—with Mars initially citing obesity concerns but later admitting rising costs were the real driver. In 2002, the bar was rebranded across Europe with localized slogans like "Pleasure you can't measure" in Britain, and the recipe was tweaked to make the nougat lighter and the chocolate thinner. As of 2023, the standard UK bar remains at 51g, though a further reduction to 40g is planned for March 2026.
