After launching in 1984, it became a staple of ice cream trucks, and Unilever acquired the brand in 1989, later marketing it under the Klondike label. In July 2022, Klondike abruptly discontinued the product, citing a sharp increase in demand across its brands, which sparked widespread public backlash. High-profile figures like Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian even publicly offered to buy the rights, and the treat was memorialized in a Rick and Morty episode. Despite the outcry, the original never returned, though a similar dessert called the Tacolate, filled with cinnamon ancho chili ice cream, was launched in a 2025 collaboration between Taco Bell and Salt & Straw.
