The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) is a big-tent opposition coalition in India, led by the Indian National Congress, formed to challenge the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance in the 2024 general elections. The alliance was formally established during a meeting in Bengaluru in July 2023, where 28 parties unanimously adopted the name I.N.D.I.A., with the suggestion attributed to either Rahul Gandhi or Mamata Banerjee. Its roots trace back to a rally in September 2022, but the first formal meeting occurred in Patna in June 2023, followed by subsequent summits in Mumbai and New Delhi to discuss seat-sharing and electoral strategy, including a resolution demanding 100% counting of VVPAT slips. At its fifth meeting, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge was appointed as the alliance chairperson, while Bihar's Nitish Kumar declined the convenor role and later defected to the NDA. Despite its ambitious goal of uniting opposition parties, the alliance faced internal disagreements and defections, highlighting the challenges of maintaining a cohesive front against the ruling party.
