A retirement community is a residential complex designed for older adults who can generally care for themselves, offering shared amenities, social activities, and sometimes home care assistance. These communities come in many forms, including assisted living, independent living, congregate housing, and continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs), which provide a full continuum of care—from independent units to nursing services—under a single contract. The oldest continuously running community is Ryderwood, Washington, which was converted from a logging camp in 1953, while Del Webb's Sun City, Arizona (1960) popularized the active-adult concept, and The Villages, Florida became the largest such community in 2011. By 2010, over 2,000 CCRCs existed in the U.S. with roughly 640,000 residents, allowing seniors to "age in place" as their health needs evolve. Although these communities are often built in warm climates like Florida and Arizona, they are increasingly appearing near major cities, yet they are largely marketed to financially secure seniors, leaving few options for lower-income older adults beyond government-subsidized housing.
