The FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup, originally known as the FIBA World Championship for Women, is a quadrennial international tournament created by FIBA, with its inaugural event held in Chile in 1953. After early US victories and a Cold War-affected 1959 tournament in Moscow where US allies mostly boycotted, the Soviet Union rose to unprecedented dominance, winning a record five consecutive titles from 1959 to 1975 under coach Lidiya Alekseyeva, including a stunning 40-0 match record. Notably, only four nations have ever won the title, and the Soviet squad also captured the first women's Olympic basketball tournament in 1976. The competition was renamed after the 2014 edition and now takes place in even-numbered non-Olympic years, aligning with the men's FIFA World Cup schedule. Recent and upcoming editions include the 2022 tournament in Sydney, Australia, and the 2026 event set for Berlin, Germany.
