Sheffield United Football Club, nicknamed "the Blades" in reference to the city's cutlery industry, is a professional team based in Sheffield, England, that plays its home games at Bramall Lane and fiercely contests the Steel City derby against rivals Sheffield Wednesday. Formed in 1889 as an offshoot of the local cricket club, the club enjoyed a golden era around the turn of the 20th century, winning the English league title in 1897–98 and lifting the FA Cup four times (1899, 1902, 1915, and 1925). They were a founding member of the Premier League in 1992–93 and famously scored the competition's first-ever goal, though they were relegated the following year. After a period of decline that included a drop to the fourth tier, they achieved a rare feat by winning the Fourth Division title in 1981–82, making them one of only five English clubs to have won all four professional divisions. Under manager Chris Wilder, the club won the League One title in 2016–17 and secured Premier League promotion in 2018–19, but they have since experienced a yo-yo pattern, most recently being relegated from the top flight in the 2023–24 season.
