Tom Sullivan is an American Democratic politician currently serving in the Colorado Senate, representing District 27, after previously breaking barriers as the first Democrat to win his state House district in 2018. His political career was profoundly shaped by the 2012 Aurora theater shooting, which killed his 27-year-old son, Alex, and ignited his passionate advocacy for gun control and safety. After an unsuccessful Senate bid in 2016, Sullivan won his House seat in 2018 and later secured a Senate seat in the 2022 election, consistently capturing over 55% of the vote. As a legislator, he championed significant laws, including the "Red Flag" law (Extreme Risk Protection Orders) and the COVID-19 whistleblower protection act, and he focuses on crime victims' rights, worker protections, and mental health access.
