The Reading and Leeds Festivals are twin annual music events held simultaneously over the August bank holiday weekend in England, with headliners and major acts performing at both sites on different days. The Reading Festival, the older of the two, is the UK's longest-running popular music festival, originating in 1961 as the National Jazz Festival conceived by Harold Pendleton before moving to its permanent home in Reading in 1971. Over the decades, its lineup evolved from jazz and blues to progressive rock, punk, and new wave, and today it primarily features rock, indie, alternative, punk, and metal, with a growing hip-hop presence including headliners like Kendrick Lamar and Eminem. Run by Festival Republic (formerly part of Mean Fiddler), the events were known as the Carling Weekend from 1998 to 2007 before reverting to their original names. By 2011, the Reading site had a capacity of 87,000 and Leeds 75,000, making them a massive staple of the UK's summer music scene.
