Fidelity International is a major global investment manager, founded in 1969 as a subsidiary of the Boston-based Fidelity Investments before becoming an independent, employee-owned firm in 1980. It manages mutual funds, pensions, and platforms for clients across Europe, Asia, and beyond, expanding from Tokyo and London to over 25 locations and reporting $1.086 trillion in client assets by 2025. The company remains privately held, with employees owning the majority and the Johnson family retaining a substantial 39.89% stake. In 2012, its then-Chief Investment Officer Dominic Rossi made headlines by aggressively backing UK plans to let shareholders veto executive bonuses. More recently, it partnered with Moonfare in 2021 to expand private market access, extending that deal into Asia in 2022. However, the firm has faced controversy as a major investor in Chinese surveillance firms Hikvision and SenseTime, the former of which was sanctioned by the U.S. in 2019 for enabling human rights abuses in Xinjiang.
