Jacob Tsimerman is a Soviet-born Canadian mathematician at the University of Toronto, celebrated for his groundbreaking work in arithmetic and algebraic geometry. A mathematical prodigy, he won gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad (including a perfect score in 2004) and earned his PhD from Princeton in 2011 under Peter Sarnak. After receiving the SASTRA Ramanujan Prize in 2015, he went on to win numerous accolades, including the 2022 New Horizons in Mathematics Prize and the 2025 Fellowship of the Royal Society. Notably, he was awarded the prestigious Fields Medal in 2026, becoming the first faculty member at a Canadian university to do so, for his work on o-minimality, Griffiths' conjecture, and the André–Oort conjecture. His research, often collaborating with Jonathan Pila, culminated in the full proof of the André–Oort conjecture in 2021. In a surprise twist following his Fields Medal win, Tsimerman announced he would be joining OpenAI as a researcher in AI safety.
