David Bednar (born October 10, 1994), nicknamed "the Bednar Bandit" and "El Oso" (Spanish for 'the Bear'), is an American professional baseball pitcher currently playing for the New York Yankees after being traded from the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 31, 2025. Drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 35th round of the 2016 MLB draft, he made his major league debut on September 1, 2019, before being traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in a three-team deal in January 2021. With the Pirates, Bednar blossomed into a top reliever, posting a 2.23 ERA in his first full season (2021) and earning an MLB All-Star Game selection in 2022. After a rough 2024 season that saw him lose the closer role, he rebounded in 2025 with a 2.73 ERA and 12 saves, earning NL Reliever of the Month honors for June. The Pirates then dealt him to the Yankees for prospects Rafael Flores, Edgleen Perez, and Brian Sanchez. Off the field, Bednar hails from Mars, Pennsylvania, his younger brother Will pitches in the Giants organization, and his nickname "the Renegade" pays homage to the Styx song used as a pump-up anthem for his hometown Steelers.
