Josep Tarradellas Barcelona–El Prat Airport (BCN) is Spain's second-largest and busiest international airport, located just 15 km southwest of Barcelona, and serves as a major hub for airlines like Vueling and Level. In 2025, it achieved a record 57.4 million passengers, making it the seventh busiest in Europe. The airport's origins date back to 1918, with scheduled commercial service launching in 1927 via Iberia's inaugural route to Madrid, and it later gained fame for the Pont Aeri ("Air Bridge") shuttle to Madrid—the world's busiest air route until 2008, when high-speed rail took over. In a controversial move in 2018, the central government renamed it after Josep Tarradellas, the first Catalan president under the current constitution, without consulting regional authorities. A major modernization arrived in 2009 with the opening of the vast Terminal 1, which now handles 70% of all flights.
