Mélanie Joly (born January 16, 1979) is a prominent Canadian politician and lawyer who currently serves as Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, a role she has held since May 2025. A member of the Liberal Party, she has represented the riding of Ahuntsic-Cartierville in Parliament since 2015, after a notable career that included a second-place finish in the 2013 Montreal mayoral race against Denis Coderre. Educated at the Université de Montréal and Oxford's Brasenose College, Joly practiced law at major firms and was mentored by former PQ premier Lucien Bouchard. Entering federal politics in 2015, she unseated incumbent Maria Mourani and quickly rose through the ranks of Justin Trudeau's cabinet.
