MediaTek is a Taiwanese fabless semiconductor company founded in 1997 and headquartered in Hsinchu, designing chips for smartphones, tablets, TVs, and navigation systems. Originally a unit of United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), it was spun off in 1997 and listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange in 2001, quickly gaining a reputation for displacing competitors in new markets. The company became the world's largest smartphone chipset vendor in Q3 2020, capturing 31% market share and overtaking Qualcomm, driven by strong growth in India and Latin America. A key part of its success was providing extensive engineering support, which allowed smaller companies to enter the mobile phone market. MediaTek has grown through strategic acquisitions like Ralink (Wi-Fi) and Analog Devices' cellular division, and has recently partnered with Intel for 5G PCs and Nvidia for automotive infotainment systems.
