The Nissan Navara is a global pickup truck nameplate, known as the Frontier or NP300 in North and South America, with generations spanning the D21, D22, D40, and D23 model codes. Its name derives from the Navarre region of northern Spain, and European versions were built at Nissan's factory in Barcelona. The D21 (1985) succeeded the Datsun 720 and featured distinct Japanese and American body designs, with the American "King Cab" styled in San Diego. The D22 (1997) was a compact pickup that remained in production for years as a cheaper alternative to the larger D40, receiving a bold facelift in 2000 for the 2001 model year. Production expanded to plants in Tennessee, Egypt, South Africa, and Mexico, though the model was discontinued in Japan after 2002 due to unfavorable tax rules and falling demand. Today, the Navara remains a versatile workhorse, with the latest D23 generation sold internationally while North America gets the separate D41 Frontier.
