UAE Team Emirates XRG

UAE Team Emirates XRG is an Emirati road cycling squad competing at the UCI WorldTeam level, the sport's top tier since 2005. Since becoming UAE Team Emirates in 2018, the team has dominated Grand Tours, winning the Tour de France four times and the Giro d'Italia once, all with Slovenian superstar Tadej Pogačar, who has also claimed five Giro di Lombardia, four Liège–Bastogne–Liège, and three Tour of Flanders victories for the squad. Its origins are surprising: it began as the Italian Lampre-Merida team, and in 2016 it was set to become China's first WorldTour team, but that deal collapsed when the project leader fell seriously ill. Rescued by Emirati investment, it was rebranded as UAE Abu Dhabi in 2017, then UAE Team Emirates in 2018, with airline Emirates as a key sponsor. In late 2024, the Abu Dhabi energy company XRG signed on as co-title sponsor for at least six years, prompting the latest name change. Backed by major state-linked firms like First Abu Dhabi Bank and ADQ, and riding Colnago bicycles, the team represents a major sporting investment by the UAE government.
