Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is a major international gateway for the New York metropolitan area, located in New Jersey and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. It is the second-busiest airport in the NYC system, behind JFK and ahead of LaGuardia. Opened in 1928 as the first major commercial airport in the United States, it also featured the nation's first paved airstrip, and in 1930 it introduced the country's first air traffic control tower and airport weather station. The Port Authority took over operations in 1948, and today the airport serves over 50 carriers, with United Airlines as its dominant tenant, handling about 63% of passengers and making EWR its largest hub. In 2023, the airport set a record by serving 49.1 million passengers, making it one of the busiest airports in the world. The airport is well-connected via the AirTrain Newark, which links terminals to NJ Transit and Amtrak rail services, and its historic Building One from 1935 is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
