Robert Downey Jr. (born April 4, 1965) is a celebrated American actor whose films have grossed over $14.3 billion worldwide, making him one of the highest-grossing actors of all time and the world's highest-paid from 2013 to 2015. After an early debut in his father's films, he earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Charlie Chaplin in Chaplin (1992), but his career was later derailed by drug addiction before he achieved lasting sobriety in 2003. He achieved global superstardom as Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe beginning in 2008, and is set to return to the franchise as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday (2026). He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Oppenheimer (2023) and has also starred in Sherlock Holmes (2009) and Tropic Thunder (2008).
