Real Club Celta de Vigo, commonly known as Celta, is a Spanish football club based in Vigo, Galicia, that competes in La Liga and is nicknamed Os Celestes (The Sky Blues). Founded in August 1923 from the merger of Real Vigo Sporting and Real Fortuna—championed by sports writer Manuel de Castro—the club's name honors the ancient Celtic peoples of the region, and they play at the 24,870-seat Balaídos stadium. Despite never winning the league or Copa del Rey, they have reached the Copa final three times (including a 2001 loss to Real Zaragoza) and achieved their best league finish of fourth place in 2002–03, which earned them a Champions League appearance where Arsenal eliminated them in the round of 16. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, the "EuroCelta" era saw them beat Liverpool 4–1 on aggregate in the 1998–99 UEFA Cup and thrash Juventus 4–0 and Benfica 7–0 the following season, with stars like Alexander Mostovoi and Valery Karpin leading the charge. They also won the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2000 and reached the Europa League semi-finals in 2016–17, losing to Manchester United. Celta share a fierce Galician derby rivalry with Deportivo A Coruña, and their early history includes a first match victory of 8–2 over Boavista and a 1947–48 season where striker Pahiño won the Pichichi Trophy.
