Little League Baseball and Softball is a nonprofit organization based in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, that organizes youth baseball and softball leagues across the U.S. and in more than 80 countries. It was founded in 1939 by Carl Edwin Stotz in Williamsport, with the first game played on June 6, 1939, between Lundy Lumber and Lycoming Dairy. The organization, incorporated in 1950, holds a congressional charter and hosts the annual Little League Baseball World Series at its complex, which includes Howard J. Lamade Stadium. A notable piece of history involves Kathryn "Tubby" Johnston Massar, the first girl to play in 1950, after which girls were banned until 1974, when a lawsuit and a bill signed by President Gerald Ford opened the league to them. As of 2008, the organization boasted nearly 2.6 million participants, and many Major League Baseball players began their careers in local Little Leagues.
