Mallorca (or Majorca) is Spain's largest Balearic Island and the seventh largest in the Mediterranean, with its capital Palma serving as the region's administrative hub since the islands became an autonomous community in 1983. A top holiday destination for northern Europeans—especially Germans, British, Dutch, and Irish—its Palma de Mallorca Airport handled 28 million passengers in 2017, reflecting a steady tourism boom. The name derives from Latin insula maior ("larger island"), later hypercorrected to Mallorca to contrast with Menorca ("the smaller one"). Human settlement began around 2500–2300 BC with Bell Beaker peoples, whose arrival drove the native dwarf goat-antelope Myotragus balearicus and other endemic mammals to extinction, and who left behind Bronze Age megalithic structures known as talaiots. The island later fell under Phoenician and Carthaginian influence, was conquered by Rome in 123 BC (founding Pollentia and Palmaria and famed for its slingers), then passed to the Vandals in 427, was restored to Byzantine rule in 534, and faced increasing Muslim raids from 707 onward.
