Amal Clooney (née Alamuddin, born 3 February 1978 in Beirut) is a Lebanese-British international human rights lawyer renowned for representing high-profile clients such as WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, former Ukrainian PM Yulia Tymoshenko, and Yazidi activist Nadia Murad. After fleeing the Lebanese Civil War as a child, she studied at Oxford and NYU, where she clerked for Judge Sonia Sotomayor, and later worked at the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, assisting in the prosecution of Slobodan Milošević. She also prosecuted Hezbollah members at the Special Tribunal for Lebanon and has defended journalists like Maria Ressa and Khadija Ismayilova, reflecting her strong focus on media freedom. Currently, she serves as a professor of practice at Oxford's Blavatnik School of Government and co-founded the Oxford Institute of Technology and Justice to leverage AI for greater access to justice. In 2024, she received a Legal 500 lawyer of the year award for her outstanding contributions to international law.
