Hurricane Dolly was a strong tropical cyclone that struck Deep South Texas in July 2008, becoming the second hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season. It formed on July 20 from a tropical wave, unusually bypassing the tropical depression stage to be named directly. After making its first landfall near Cancún on the Yucatán Peninsula on July 21 (which left 17 dead in Guatemala), it moved into the Gulf of Mexico and intensified to a Category 2 hurricane. It weakened slightly and made a final landfall on South Padre Island, Texas on July 23 as a Category 1 storm with 85 mph winds. The storm caused widespread power outages (212,000 in Texas, 125,000 in Tamaulipas), dumped over 16 inches of rain in isolated areas, and led to one drowning off the Florida Panhandle, resulting in $1.6 billion in damage and 22 deaths. Despite the severity, the name "Dolly" was not retired and was reused in the 2014 season.
