George Lombard Jr. (born June 2, 2005) is a shortstop for the New York Yankees, who selected him with the 26th overall pick in the first round of the 2023 MLB draft. A standout at Gulliver Preparatory School in Florida, he won state championships in both baseball and soccer before signing with the Yankees for a $3.3 million bonus instead of attending Vanderbilt. After climbing through the minor leagues, he began the 2026 season with Double-A Somerset, batting .312 before earning a promotion to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He made his Major League debut on August 4, 2026, at Yankee Stadium against the St. Louis Cardinals, hitting a solo home run and drawing a walk in a 2-0 victory—a call-up that effectively swapped roster spots with the demoted Anthony Volpe. Lombard comes from a deep baseball lineage: his father, George Lombard Sr., is a former MLB player and current bench coach for the Detroit Tigers, while his brother Jacob was drafted by the Miami Marlins in 2026. Additionally, his mother's side is Cuban (he speaks fluent Spanish), and his grandmother, Posy, was a civil rights activist and associate of Martin Luther King Jr.
