The NOAA Hurricane Hunters are specialized aircraft operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that fly directly into hurricanes to collect vital data for forecasters and scientists. Based at the Aircraft Operations Center in Lakeland, Florida, the fleet includes two Lockheed WP-3D Orion turboprops—affectionately nicknamed Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy—and a high-altitude Gulfstream IV-SP called Gonzo. During 8-10 hour missions, crews of up to 20 deploy GPS-equipped dropsondes to measure atmospheric conditions, transmitting the data to the NOAA National Hurricane Center to improve storm track and intensity forecasts. Beyond hurricanes, these flying research labs also study winter storms, ocean winds, and thunderstorm research, and they are set to be replaced by two modern Lockheed C-130J Hercules aircraft, contracted in September 2024 and expected to enter service by 2030. This unique fleet provides an essential, up-close look at some of Earth's most powerful weather systems, helping to protect lives and property.
