Ashley Barnes (born 30 October 1989) is a professional footballer who currently plays as a striker for Burnley, having previously carved out a career through a series of lower-league clubs including Plymouth Argyle, Oxford United, and Brighton & Hove Albion. He rose to prominence at Brighton, scoring the decisive goal in a 4–3 win over Dagenham & Redbridge in April 2011 that clinched promotion to the Championship, and later finishing as the club's top scorer in the 2011–12 season. In January 2014, he transferred to Burnley, where he scored the only goal against Hull City in November 2014 to secure the team's first Premier League win of that campaign. Barnes is also remembered for a controversial incident in March 2013 when he was sent off for attempting to trip a referee, which led to a seven-match suspension. Internationally, he earned a single cap for Austria's under-20 team in 2008, but his application for Austrian citizenship was rejected in 2019.
