Shawn Steel (born c. 1946) is a prominent California Republican politician who has served as the state's Republican National Committee member since 2008 and previously chaired the California Republican Party from 2001 to 2003. He is best known for co-founding the successful 2003 recall of Governor Gray Davis, where he was the first signatory of over a million petition signatures, ultimately paving the way for Arnold Schwarzenegger's governorship. Steel has also held key convention roles, including Sergeant at Arms at the 2016 Republican National Convention, and is married to U.S. Ambassador to South Korea, Michelle Steel. Outside politics, he is a trial attorney specializing in personal injury law, notably representing alternative health providers like chiropractors, and he famously broke legal ground by representing families of the Jonestown massacre victims. A frequent media commentator on CNN and Fox News, Steel has published over 50 articles in major outlets and continues to teach ethics and jurisprudence at several California universities.
