Russell Carrington Wilson (born November 29, 1988) is a former NFL quarterback who played 14 seasons, primarily for the Seattle Seahawks, leading them to their first Super Bowl title in Super Bowl XLVIII and a heartbreaking loss in Super Bowl XLIX, while earning nine Pro Bowl selections. A celebrated dual-threat quarterback, he set the record for most wins through nine seasons and retired as the only player with both 40,000 passing yards and 5,000 rushing yards. After playing college football at NC State and Wisconsin—where he set the single-season FBS passer-rating record in 2011—he was drafted by Seattle in 2012 and later signed record-breaking contracts, including a $140 million extension in 2019 and a $245 million deal with the Denver Broncos in 2022. His time in Denver was largely unsuccessful, leading to his release and a 2024 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he earned a tenth Pro Bowl selection, before retiring in 2026 to join CBS Sports as a sportscaster. Off the field, Wilson was named the Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2020, is part-owner of the Seattle Sounders FC, and also played minor league baseball earlier in his career. His family history is notable, with his great-great-grandfather having been enslaved, and his paternal grandfather serving as president of Norfolk State University.
