The Tooro Kingdom is a Bantu kingdom in western Uganda, home to the Batooro people who speak Rutooro, a language closely related to that of the neighboring Banyoro. Ruled by King (Omukama) Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV since 1995, the kingdom's administration is based in Fort Portal and is managed by a Prime Minister and Cabinet, currently led by Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki (appointed February 2025). The government includes a parliament (Orukurato) representing various clans, and it frequently reshuffles its cabinet to improve development, health, and education, while also rehabilitating royal burial sites to preserve heritage. Traditional leadership remains crucial, with the Omusuga (head of the royal clan), currently Prince Charles Kayondo Kamurasi Akiiki, advising the King on culture and royal property. Similarly, the Batebe (Princess Royal), currently Princess Ruth Nsemere Komuntale, serves as the King's top advisor on traditional law and female leadership, a role famously held by Princess Elizabeth from 1966 to 1995. This unique blend of modern administrative reforms and deep-rooted cultural traditions ensures the kingdom's identity remains strong in contemporary Uganda.
