Kenscoff is a commune in Haiti's Ouest department, located about 10 kilometers southeast of Port-au-Prince in the Chaîne de la Selle foothills, and at roughly 1,500 meters elevation, it holds the distinction of being the highest permanent settlement in the Caribbean. With a population of around 52,200, the town enjoys a subtropical highland climate that is significantly cooler than the capital, though it is not as cold as Constanza in the Dominican Republic. The town is known for its vibrant weekly market where rural farmers travel long distances on foot to sell their goods, and it hosts notable institutions like the Baptist Haiti Mission and the Wynne Farm Ecological Reserve. However, the community has been tragically impacted by gang violence, which escalated after a first major attack in January 2025. In August 2026, armed men attacked the town, killing at least 47 people—including 5 children—and kidnapping over 50 others, with victims reportedly executed inside a church compound where they had sought shelter. The mayor reported that at least 25 homes were burned and two government employees were killed, while the gang leader, known as Izo 2 or "Didi," threatened the director of Haiti's National Police, Vladimir Paraison.
