Indira Talwani (born 1960) is a U.S. District Judge for the District of Massachusetts, appointed by President Barack Obama in 2014 after a career in private practice and confirmed by a 94-0 Senate vote. She gained national attention for sentencing actress Felicity Huffman to 14 days in prison as part of the Operation Varsity Blues college admissions scandal. In recent years, Talwani has issued several major rulings against the Trump administration, including blocking the termination of Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood in July 2025 and pausing limits on mail-in ballot delivery in August 2026. She also blocked attempts to revoke immigration parole, ruled in June 2026 that the President has no constitutional power to force states to release voting rolls, and stopped the administration from changing federal grant terms after the fact in July 2026. Her rulings underscore her role as a judicial check on executive power concerning elections, immigration, and federal funding.
