Brooklyn Center is a first-ring suburban city in Hennepin County, Minnesota, part of the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area, with a population of about 33,782 as of 2020 and recognized as the most ethnically diverse community in the state. Incorporated as a village on February 18, 1911, to avoid annexation by Minneapolis, it became a charter city on December 8, 1966. The city experienced rapid growth after the 1940s, marked by the construction of the Brookdale shopping center in 1960 and the preservation of the Earle Brown estate (now the Heritage Center), a historic site built in 1878. Geographically, the Mississippi River forms its eastern boundary, and it features parks like North Mississippi Regional Park and Palmer Lake Park, connected by the Shingle Creek watershed. In April 2021, the city gained national attention when Daunte Wright was fatally shot by a police officer, sparking protests and riots, and leading to a permanent memorial created with Juxtaposition Arts. Today, Brooklyn Center balances its residential character with commercial development, maintaining its historic sites while addressing modern challenges.
