The New England Patriots are a professional American football team based in the Greater Boston area, playing their home games at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, and owned by Robert Kraft since 1994. Founded in 1959 as the Boston Patriots in the American Football League (AFL), the team joined the NFL in 1970 and changed its name to the New England Patriots after moving to Foxborough in 1971. After years of mediocrity, the franchise entered a legendary dynasty from 2001 to 2019 under head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady, achieving unprecedented success. This era produced a record-tying 6 Super Bowl wins (tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers), a record 12 Super Bowl appearances, and the only undefeated 16-game regular season in NFL history (2007).
