Nipsey Hussle (born Ermias Joseph Asghedom in 1985) rose from the Crenshaw District of Los Angeles—where he dropped out of high school and joined the Rollin' 60s Crips—to become a prominent West Coast rapper, activist, and entrepreneur. He gained fame through his mixtape series, notably Crenshaw (which Jay-Z famously purchased 100 copies of for $100 each), and his critically acclaimed debut album Victory Lap (2018), which peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 and earned a Grammy nomination. Beyond music, he founded the Marathon Clothing store and the Vector 90 co-working space, channeling an "entrepreneurial spirit" inspired by a trip to Eritrea into community activism. On March 31, 2019, Hussle was fatally shot outside his Marathon Clothing store in South Central Los Angeles. Eric Holder was arrested, found guilty of first-degree murder in July 2022, and sentenced to 60 years to life in prison in February 2023. His legacy was cemented posthumously when he won two Grammy Awards at the 62nd ceremony for "Racks in the Middle" and "Higher".
