Elden Ring is a 2022 action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco, directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki with worldbuilding by fantasy author George R. R. Martin, releasing on February 25, 2022. Set in the Lands Between, players control a customizable character seeking to repair the Elden Ring, exploring a vast open world on the steed Torrent while engaging in melee, magic, and stealth combat, alongside cooperative and player-versus-player multiplayer modes. Inspired by Dark Souls, the developers gave Martin freedom to craft the backstory while Miyazaki wrote the in-game narrative, focusing heavily on environmental scale. The game won numerous Game of the Year awards and is hailed as one of the greatest games of all time, selling over 30 million copies. Its acclaimed DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, launched in June 2024 and sold over ten million copies, while a multiplayer spinoff, Elden Ring Nightreign, arrived in 2025. A film adaptation is currently in production, slated for a 2028 release.
