Theodore Kaczynski, better known as the Unabomber, was a mathematics prodigy who abandoned a promising academic career in 1969 to become a domestic terrorist. Between 1978 and 1995, he carried out a nationwide mail bombing campaign that killed 3 people and injured 23 others, targeting those he believed were advancing modern technology and destroying nature. He authored the 35,000-word manifesto Industrial Society and Its Future (1995), which rejected all forms of technology and advocated for a violent revolution, leading the FBI and Attorney General Janet Reno to publish it in The Washington Post in September 1995. His brother, David, recognized the prose style and reported him to the FBI, leading to Kaczynski's arrest in 1996 at his remote, off-grid cabin in Montana, ending the longest and most expensive investigation in FBI history. He pleaded guilty in 1998 to avoid the death penalty and was sentenced to life in prison without parole. After being diagnosed with cancer in 2021, Kaczynski stopped treatment in March 2023 and died by suicide in prison on June 10, 2023.
