Ratko Mladić (1942–2026) was a Bosnian Serb military officer who led the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS) during the Yugoslav Wars, and in 2017 he was convicted of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). After a long career in the Yugoslav People's Army, he became the VRS Chief of Staff during the Bosnian War (1992–1995), where he was held responsible for the siege of Sarajevo and the Srebrenica massacre. Indicted in 1996, he evaded capture for nearly sixteen years—with a €5 million bounty on his head—until he was arrested in Serbia in 2011 and extradited to The Hague. His trial ran from 2012 to 2017, ending with a life sentence for ten charges, including one count of genocide, though he was acquitted of a second genocide charge. He died in prison in The Hague on 27 August 2026, while serving his sentence.
